Will FAA regulations/flight cancellations affect airfare?

I'm planning a vacation for January of 2009, and I'm concerned that all of the new FAA regulations being imposed on the airlines and all of these flight cancellations combined with high fuel costs are going to make airfare go up over the next few months. Originally I was going to wait until closer to my vacation to buy airfare, but now I'm afraid if I wait too long, airfare will skyrocket. Anyone have an opinion on when would be the best time for me to buy my tickets?
