Can Brick be placed over a porch?

I have a house I am building. The underneath of the porch is brick then there is the roofline then I want to place more brick over that. My contractor doesn't think this is possible unless there is major structural supports added. I don't know if he knows what he is talking about. I want to bring the brick up from the lower porch, cut a hole in the porch roof and let the brick sit on top of brick. I feel like then you could flash around the brick on the roof just like with a chimney. Is this possible?
