Can my husband use his US green card and pport to enter Canada?Will he ever be able to come back to U.S.?

I am a US citizen born and raised. My husband was deported about a year ago back to Ethiopia. He had one narcotic felony and one pending. I was told by the Canadian Emby in Ethiopia that if he has a green card and a pport he could Travel there. Im guessing the U.S. flags and cancels your alien number even if they don't take your green card from you but I'm not sure. I didn't tell the Emby that he had been deported from here. Unfortunately he had a terrible immigration lawyer and Ethiopia is not the greatest place to live. I know because I tried for six months. We have a three year old son together so I tried.
